To fight the threat of screwworm infection in cats, the FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) on November 21, 2025 for Credelio CAT (lotilaner), making it the first drug that has been authorized by the agency for New World screwworm (NWS) in cats. This follows their EUA for Credelio for dogs that was issued in late October.

Credelio CAT Can Now Be Used to Treat NWS

Based on available scientific evidence, the FDA determined that Credelio CAT could be an effective treatment against New World screwworm (NWS) infections in kittens and cats. They also believe the potential benefits of using the medication outweigh its potential risks.

Experts say the majority of kitties in the United States have a low risk of New World screwworm infestation, thanks simply to their location. But cats who live close to the Mexican border, particularly those who spend time outdoors, might be at greater risk—one of many reasons to keep your feline friend indoors.

Also, if you travel with your cat to a country where New World screwworm cases are active, your pet might be exposed to the parasite.

You’ll Need a Prescription to Get Credelio CAT

Credelio CAT, which was FDA-approved in 2019 to fight fleas and ticks on kittens and cats, comes in the form of chewable tablets. It is only available to those who have a prescription from their veterinarian.

When using Credelio CAT, your vet will need to monitor your pet’s condition and make sure the medication works safely and effectively. Potential side effects of Credelio CAT include neurologic reactions like ataxia, seizures, and muscle tremors.

To learn if your cat might be at risk of New World screwworm infection, talk to your veterinarian. They can also discuss the symptoms to look out for. And if you think your cat or kitten has an infestation and needs this medication, contact your veterinarian for a proper diagnosis, treatment plan, and personalized guidance.
