It's Muddy Paw Season! Are You Ready?

One of the true rites of passage to being a dog owner is dealing with muddy paws. During the pandemic, I was glued to the myriad designer shows that were streaming on every network. And I think I may have drooled a little as I watched them stroll through those renovated homes that now featured mud rooms and something that’s I considered totally OTT - dog washing stations. I mean it’s really just a hand-held showerhead that you use to hose off muddy feet before they go racing through the house, across the carpets and onto the furniture. But what a concept – cleaning your dog’s paws before he enters the house.
With three dogs and an amazing 19-acre leash-free park just a five-minute drive away, we enjoy having the room to roam during all four seasons. And because that includes those mushy snow thaws and spring showers, we’re talking mud. And lots of it. I’ve tried bringing damp towels to clean off dirty feet as well as those pre-moistened baby wipes that a fellow pet parent once suggested. Neither was enough to make a dent in the dirt.
But leave it to the oh-so-clever pet product industry to have this covered off. And in a much more fulsome manner through a wide range of pet paw cleaning options. For example, if you’re chasing a quick spruce-up that you can accomplish before the fur kid even enters your nice clean car, I love this super portable paw washer called the MudBuster from Dexas. No setup is required, you just add water, insert your pooch’s paw, rotate it around so it gets into all those nooks and crannies, then pat dry and repeat on the other three feet. Now, it doesn’t involve soap so it's not what I would call a full wash, but it's perfect for taking loose dirt and wet mud to a state that’s a little less offensive to the upholstery on your back seat.
If you’re one of the lucky ones with a garage, back deck, or mud room, there’s nothing quite like taking your pooch to a more “house-ready” state via a portable dog washing station. Particularly if your dog likes to dig and tends to have mud up to his elbows and along his underside. This Little Dipper option from Furesh is quick to set up and folds flat for easy storage. While it’s designed to be used in your existing bathtub or shower stall, any access to water (thinking hose or watering can) makes it perfect for outdoor use. Made from durable PVC and capable of holding pets up to 40 pounds, this elevated dog bath has a drain hose to make expunging dirty water, oh-so easy.
And if your dog is of the larger variety, this elevated Big Dipper dog bathing tub – also from Furesh – is the one you want. Weighing just 17 pounds when set up but capable of holding pets up to 120 pounds, this portable wash station includes a set of aluminum stairs that make it easy for your pet to climb up and into the roomy PVC tub. So, no heavy lifting for you and, because it stands 33 inches tall, no stooping over either. Even better, all components fold flat in just seconds, making it super-simple for you to store and transport this lightweight dog grooming tub.
The simple portable paw-washing cup gets a techy update with this automatic option that does all the work for you. Just like the standard, hand-held option, all you need to do is fill the reservoir with water and insert your pooch’s dirty paw. Now, this is where this unit steps up to the plate to clean away mud, dirt, and debris, quickly. A soft, internal silicone brush is activated by a 7.4-volt high-power charge that kicks into rotating action the moment you press the button. Two modes of cleaning (clockwise and counter) get the job done safely and effectively. For those who love to camp or take road trips, you’ll love that once charged, this dog paw cleaner is good to go for up to 10 days.
Muck happens and often when you least expect it. That’s one reason that having a no-rinse paw cleaner in your travel tote - like this one from Uproot - is such a great idea. And the hand-held options are so easy to use. Just press the nozzle and out comes a lush foamy cleanser that’s chemical-free, fragrance-free and gentle on pads. A super-soft bristle brush gently removes mud and dirt, then you simply wipe with a dry cloth. No water involved means no need to blot or allow drying time. And because this mess-free paw cleaning option is also alcohol-free, you can use it on dry or cracked paws without concerns about causing your pet pain.
I can’t be the only one who heads out with the fur crew and forgets some of the crucial elements to a successful outing, at home. Sometimes it’s the poop bags, other times, it’s their treats or the brush I use to remove burrs. If you’re like me and love the concept of a one-stop shop – meaning it's all organized for me – then this is the dog paw cleaner for you. Why? Because it’s a complete dog foot-washing kit. Yes, not only has Comotech included a non-toxic silicone foot cleaning cup with this Big Green package, but three super-absorbent towels to dry him off afterwards. Which is a big part of the clean-up if your pooch is about to jump into your car or walk into your home with still-wet feet. But there’s more because it also has a gentle, silicone brush that straps to your hand for working up and down your dog’s legs. I mean, since when does mud stay on the underside of his pads?
